What are Probiotic?

We often hear or see this word in health commercials and products; it is deemed beneficial to human health. Probiotics derived its name from two Latin words: Pro meaning for and biotic meaning life (for life). From this etymology, we are at least given an idea on what are probiotics and how they work.

Probiotics are tiny living organisms that have a variety of positive effects on human vitality and health, especially intestinal health. Relatively recently, a great deal of knowledge has been released to the public concerning the health benefits of probiotics, and probiotics are becoming more and more popular with the populace as time goes on. If you are intrigued at the prospect of starting a probiotics regimen, the simplest method to get started with is yogurt ingestion. Yogurt is replete with beneficial probiotic bacteria. However, it wasn't until recently that science revealed how potent yogurt can be as a probiotic digestive aid.

Unfortunately, lots of yogurt companies still pasteurize their yogurt:

this means that much of the yogurt on the market has no health benefits. In order to make sure you take advantage of the health benefits of yogurt, make sure that the yogurt you buy says, "live cultures" on the label. If yogurt simply isn't for you (and many people do not like the taste of yogurt), then you should consider trying probiotic dietary supplements. A variety of live, health promoting bacteria are available in most commercial probiotic supplements. The only way to find out which probiotic supplements are for you is to try out several different brands, and note which brand seems to improve your digestion the most. The brand that has the most positive effects is the brand you will want to stick with long-term.

If the idea of swallowing probiotic pills does not appeal to you, you could try kefir. Kefir is similar to yogurt (it has the same beneficial probiotic bacteria), but the consistency is very different. Yogurt has a gelatinous, semi-solid consistency, while kefir is a liquid.

If for some reason you cannot stand the taste of yogurt (and a great many people cannot), then you should think about taking probiotic health supplements. Most commercial probiotic supplements contain a good number of beneficial bacteria; just always remember to check the label before purchasing one. If you are one of those people that cannot stand swallowing pills of any kind, then probiotic health supplements is probably not the best choice for you. You should consider trying kefir instead. Kefir is a fermented milk beverage made by using ST bacteria to convert the lactose in milk into lactic acid. The lactic acid in kefir gives it a very bitter taste, but some people actually enjoy the flavor.

Prevention of colon cancer. Certain studies reveal that the use of probiotics may help prevent the formation of colon cancer. Certain strains of lactobacilli have been found to exert an anti-Mutagenic effect. Anti-mutagens prevent a cell from mutating and turning into a cancer cell. Preventing the cell from mutating prevents the formation of cancer. We may think bacteria only cause illness and harm, but we have to remember that we cannot also survive without them. The question: what is probiotics reminds us of this fact.
